Reduce Postage Costs

As we all know, 1st-class postage rates keep going up. What can you do to reduce your postage costs this year? Bulk mail is a prime marketing tool for many direct marketing organizations. Have you ever noticed how much postage is on that type of mail? Or how about many of the bills you receive—have you noticed a meter imprint of $.258 or $.182? Postage rates such as these are easily attainable by most organizations (savings can start at mail volumes as low as 250 pieces).

If you mail in any kind of volume, you can achieve significant postage savings by a process called "presorting." By presorting your mail, you save the Post Office a lot of manual effort, so they give you a lower rate to compensate for the time savings. Presorting has enough rules and regulations that, for most companies, the process is best left to a mailing house. Mail houses have the software and the equipment to make the job very simple. You just take the boxes of envelopes, letters, literature, etc., to your favorite mail house with your clean list and let them do all the work. No folding, stuffing, or metering for you. What could be easier?

The part that anyone can benefit from, regardless of volume, is cleaning your list. A clean mailing list is also a key requirement to qualify for presorting discounts for volume mailing. A corrected mailing list will save you money by eliminating undeliverable and duplicate addresses. You also look more professional because the address information is spelled correctly and consistently. The PC-based software to do this comes on CD-ROM and provides a correct 9-digit ZIP code, corrects and standardizes the address line, and corrects the city and state. The 9-digit zip code is the key to the postage savings on bulk mail; with it, the mail can be "bar coded" with the zip code information when the addresses are printed by the presort software at the mail house.
